The Baltimore Ravens have waived a two-time veteran Pro Bowl running back from their roster ahead of Saturday’s playoff tilt with the Houston Texans.
Per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Ravens waived veteran running back and former Super Bowl champion Melvin Gordon. The 30-year-old appeared in four games for the Ravens during the regular season.
The move isn’t that surprising, as the Ravens are already set at running back with Gus Edwards and Justice Hill. Not to mention that likely 2023 MVP award winner Lamar Jackson is Baltimore’s top rusher.
Gordon saw 26 carries in his four game appearances for the Ravens, tallying 81 yards and one touchdown to go along with three receptions for 46 yards. But Gordon, who’s struggled with ball security issues throughout his career, also committed a fumble in the club’s meaningless Week 18 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Though he didn’t play a snap for them, Gordon won a Super Bowl 57 ring as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs last year. The Chiefs picked up Gordon following his release from the Denver Broncos, another year in which Gordon struggled with protecting the football (five fumbles in 10 games).
The Ravens will host C.J. Stroud and the underdog Texans at M&T Bank Stadium on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. EST. With a victory, the Ravens will reach their first AFC Championship Game since 2012 — the last year the franchise won the Super Bowl.
