Former Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield wanted to do something very special for his mother for Mother’s Day and enlisted the help of ESPN in order to do so.
“We asked @bakermayfield to write a letter to his mom,” ESPN’s flagship television show SportsCenter tweeted. “What he didn’t know was that she was listening in the next room.”
Baker Mayfield read the letter directly into the camera while his mother, Gina Mayfield, watched on a monitor.
“Dear mom. Words cannot describe how thankful I am to be able to call you my mother,” Baker Mayfield read. “There’s no handbook on parenting, but if there was, you would be the author.”
“When everything was not going our way — between the car wreck, the rental car and the awful weather — looking back on it, you never flinched,” Baker Mayfield said. “You were gonna make sure your son was going to get to where he wanted to go to school.
“That’s the type of love that I’m so thankful for. That’s the type of love that makes you so unique and special.”
Gina Mayfield wiped away her tears as she got up and walked into the next room and gave him a big hug.
