Back in July, the Panthers acquired former No. 1 overall pick, Baker Mayfield, in a trade with the Cleveland Browns. In return, the Panthers shipped a conditional fifth-round pick to the Browns that can turn into a fourth depending on Mayfield’s playing time.
That playing time never got close as he fell to the third QB on the depth chart so he asked and got his release a few days ago. The move is only surprising given the proximity to the trade, as Mayfield’s first season with the Panthers has proven to be tumultuous.
This week, the Rams put in a waiver claim for the quarterback, which means that the Texans, Bears, and Broncos opted not to add Mayfield to their roster. The difference in Mayfield’s career compared to two years ago is insane and his wife is feeling it.
Emily Mayfield took to her Instagram story and bid farewell to the “weirdest, most confusing year” in an emotional note.

The Rams will inherit the remaining $1.35 million on Mayfield’s contract.
Los Angeles was in need of depth at the quarterback position after starter Matthew Stafford was placed on IR due to a spinal cord contusion.
Mayfield, the first-overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, requested a trade out of Cleveland in March, following the Browns’ pursuit of Deshaun Watson. It forced Cleveland to go back to Watson and then offer him a fully guaranteed contract for him to come there.
The defending Super Bowl champs are 3-9 and are playing for nothing else more than respect and draft position.
Mayfield could play as soon as Thursday night when the Rams host the Raiders.
