The 2022 season was supposed to be the year where Baker Mayfield silenced his haters as well as the former team that chose Deshaun Watson over him.
Baker Mayfield is healthy enough to play again, but the former No. 1 overall pick is now the backup in Carolina. Panthers interim head coach Steve Wilks is sticking with P.J. Walker as his starter after Walker turned in another solid performance on Sunday.
Mayfield has been “the ultimate pro” and has accepted the backup role, according to Wilks.
Mayfield addressed being a backup when speaking to reporters on Thursday.
“It’s a different role for me, for sure. But just finding my way through it,” he said, per team insider Joe Person.
Mayfield’s NFL career has nosedived over the last two seasons. The Carolina Panthers quarterback has struggled so far this season, resulting in his benching.

Before his injury, Mayfield threw for 962 yards, four touchdowns, four interceptions along with 40 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown.
PJ will have himself a fourth straight opportunity as the starter on Sunday. And as for Mayfield, he’ll be in a supportive role on the sidelines.
