The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are leading the NFC South at 3-1 to start the season, thanks in a very large part to the brilliance of Baker Mayfield.
When the former Oklahoma star replaced Tom Brady as the Bucs starting quarterback, fans tipped them to draft Caleb Williams in 2024. However, Baker has been excellent so far, having thrown for 882 yards, seven touchdowns, and two interceptions so far this season.
The Bucs are pleased with the QB choice to this point, but Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine has suggested he could be playing for another NFC side next season.
Mayfield fired Tampa Bay to a season-opening win against the Minnesota Vikings last month. And it’s been suggested he could end up starting next term with the latter.
“The term ‘big contract’ is fluid here, because Baker Mayfield is not going to get a contract that is big relative to the league’s top quarterbacks. But if he keeps up his early-season play, he could be paid like an average NFL starter next spring,” Ballentine writes.
Should the Vikings pursue Mayfield in free agency, they would be able to get a deal done easily as Kirk Cousins would no longer be under contract.

Mayfield is on a one-year $4 million deal with the Buccaneers and could make significantly more as long as he keeps performing the way he’s been. The Bucs would also be able to offer him a bigger deal but Minnesota has the lure of two of the best wide receivers in the league: Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison.
Still, the likelihood is that he remains in Tampa Bay as long as the Bucs want to keep him around.
