Baker Mayfield will be playing with his fourth NFL team in 2023, having signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in free agency this offseason.
Mayfield began his career in Cleveland, where he was drafted first-overall by the Browns in 2018. After four up-and-down seasons in Ohio, he was sent to the Carolina Panthers, where he sputtered before being released — and subsequently signing with the Los Angeles Rams for the final month of the 2022 season.
Mayfield rebounded in L.A., finding his groove in Sean McVay’s offense and earning himself a another chance on a Bucs team that was looking to replace a retired Tom Brady.
Some may have expected Mayfield to stick with the no. 17 jersey number that he seemed to find success with during his short tenure with the Rams. However, the soon-to-be 28-year-old quarterback recently announced that he will actually be going back to the No. 6 he had previously worn during his time with the Panthers, Browns and even during his college days with the Oklahoma Sooners.
Barring something unforeseen at the draft, Mayfield is expected to enter 2023 in a quarterback battle with 2021 second-round pick Kyle Trask.
In his ten starts last season, Mayfield went 2-8, completing 60 percent of his passes for 2,163 yards, 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions. In 69 career starts, the former Heisman Trophy winner holds a 31-38 record.
