The Tampa Bay Buccaneers weren’t much of a match for the Detroit Lions on Sunday evening, but the 20-6 loss at home may not be their biggest concern at this time.
Per Buccaneers.com writer Scott Smith, head coach Todd Bowles told reporters that starting quarterback Baker Mayfield has a contusion on his left hand. Fortunately, injuries came back negative.
The 28-year-old has been one of the feel-good surprise stories of 2023, coming into Week 6 with a 69.6 percent completion percentage for 882 yards and seven touchdowns against a pair of interceptions.
But Sunday was a tough outing for the first overall pick of 2018. Mayfield completed just 19 of 37 pass attempts for 206 yards, zero touchdowns and one interception in the 20-6 loss. The Lions held star wide receiver Mike Evans to four catches for 49 yards, and the Bucs managed to convert on just two of 12 third downs.
Fortunately for the Bucs, all three of their NFC South rivals lost on Sunday, so they remain the leaders of the division with a 3-2 record. Tampa is half a game up on the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints, who both enter Week 7 with 3-3 records.
