Baker Mayfield is having a resurgence in his career.
Last year, Baker Mayfield had two different teams give up on him, first the Browns and then the Panthers. Through the first quarter of his first season with the Buccaneers, QB Baker Mayfield has proved to be good for the team both on and off the field, and it’s bringing out the best ball of his career.
It did not start out like this as at one point, it seemed as if Mayfield would not win the quarterback battle this summer. That all changed once one of his coaches made a comment about his play that he heard.
“Hey, I don’t know who that guy is, but leave him home tomorrow,” talking about QB Baker Mayfield.
It took less than 24 hours before Mayfield would show up as a different man and has been on a tear ever since.
The coach who said that was quarterbacks coach Thad Lewis.

Mayfield laughed, gave a joking “whatever,” then conceded, “I know.”
Mayfield’s rollercoaster career has been well documented. The No. 1 overall pick in 2018, Mayfield seemed to be the future at a position that had been a revolving door for the Browns. He led Cleveland to its first playoff berth in 2020, which was their first since 2002, but things would go downhill from there.
Expectations are obviously lowered in Tampa following Tom Brady’s retirement, but Mayfield does have a talented supporting cast around him.
Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles named Mayfield the starter over Kyle Trask and it worked out as the team is 3-1 and leading in the NFC South in a year where everybody expected them to be terrible after Tom Brady retired in February.
So far on the season, Mayfield has 882 passing yards on nearly a 70 percent completion rate with seven touchdowns to his two interceptions.
