2021 was a tough campaign for Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield, to say the least. Not only was his body put under an incredible amount of duress, but so to was his mental health.
In what many believed to be a make-or-break season for the 2018 first overall pick, Mayfield suffered through a number of injuries — most notably a torn labrum in his left shoulder which he battled through for the majority of the season before finally sitting in week 18 and undergoing surgery. But that’s just the half of it.
While enduring all of these painful bumps and bruises to his body, Baker’s mind was also taking a beating, as it was impossible for him, his family, and anyone else for that matter to ignore all the scrutiny he was facing during another down season.
From Odell Beckham Jr’s dad dropping video footage of all Mayfield’s uncatchable pass attempts to his son, to everyone in the media questioning whether it was time for the Browns to move on from their so-called franchise QB, Baker had to deal with quite a bit of headaches off the field.
And it seems like he’s finally had enough.
Earlier today, Mayfield took to Twitter to announce that he was taking a break from social media in order to “focus on me, my family and loved ones” and “get right.”

Baker also took to instagram to say the following about his thoughts on social media and what they’ve done to his mental health.
Mayfield endured endured perhaps the worst statistical season of his career in 2021, as he competed just 60.5 percent of his passes for 3,010 yards, 17 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. His 83.1 quarterback rating was the second lowest of his career, and the worst part is that he went a disappointing 6-8 as the starter and his Browns failed to build off their success from 2020 to make it back to the postseason.
For now, it seems as though Baker’s job is safe, as the Browns had already picked up his fifth year option and have said that they expect Mayfield to be their starter in 2022. But, as we all know, a lot can change between now and September.
