The New England Patriots still have Bailey Zappe in their plans after releasing the quarterback on Tuesday.
The team’s decision ahead of the cut deadline came as a shocker, given Zappe’s important contributions last season. That they also cut Malik Cunningham was a surprise in itself as the exits mean Mac Jones is the only QB on the roster.
According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, the Pats had a plan in mind when they waived the player and are looking for him to return as their backup QB if he clears waivers and makes it to their practice squad. Should that fail, they will consider other options.
Zappe was a fourth-round pick out of Kentucky last year. He played in four games for NE, two of them starts, and won both of his games as a starter while Jones was out with an injury. His pass completion clocked in at an impressive 70.7 percent while he threw the football for 581 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions.
There’s also a chance the undrafted Cunningham returns to the team after making an impression in preseason. But that might be too much to ask for where fans are concerned.
Of course, Going into the season with one quarterback would be very unwise, and no one expects New England to do that. So it will be interesting to see how they go about things on the back of their recent moves.
