Just when it seemed like things were looking up for the Cardinals and disgruntled quarterback Kyler Murrray, the former No. 1 pick’s agent went and made headlines by pulling his contract proposal to the team. The 24-year-old likely doesn’t want to play on a fifth-year option and has been pushing to work out an extension with the franchise he led to the playoffs in 2021.
Arizona has no intention of trading him, but should it get to that point, different suitors are already being talked about.
One of those teams could be the Atlanta Falcons, who traded away Matt Ryan, their longtime quarterback, to the Indianapolis Colts last month.
CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin listed the Falcons as one of 10 potential landing spots for Murray if the Cardinals were to trade him.
“They rolled out the red carpet for Watson, even dumping Matt Ryan for a measly third-round pick as a result,” writes Benjamin. “So they’d surely — and wisely — look into it. The problem is, they have barely any money to spend, and even if they manipulate the cap to add him, they’ll have zero cash to build up a barren roster around him.”
The Cardinals were the cream of the crop last season as they stood at 7-0, but things fell apart towards the end of the year and the team got ousted out of the playoffs by the Rams. Murray would soon delete everything Cardinals from his social media accounts in an effort to get his extension, but nothing has happened for him.
In 2021, Murray threw for 3,787 passing yards, 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, with a completion percentage of 69.2. The former Oklahoma star added another 423 yards and five touchdowns on the ground last season.
