The Atlanta Falcons have revealed the iconic red helmets they will be playing in for three games during the upcoming season.
With the NFL approving the use of alternate headgear ahead of last term, the Falcons have joined a number of other teams to have introduced new shells. Their players will wear the novel gear against the Green Bay Packers in Week 2, as well as in Weeks 6 and 12 vs. the Washington Commanders and New Orleans Saints.
The helmets are throwbacks from the Falcons’ 1966 uniforms and are coming back after being unveiled to a very positive reception from the fanbase.
The team did not get to use red shells for 10 years due to the league’s single-helmet policy but, as noted above, the NFL has since relaxed its stance on alternate pieces.
Atlanta wore red helmets with throwback threads against the San Francisco 49ers last year for the first time since 2012, soundly beating the opposition 28-14. It’s no wonder they’re set to return in 2023.

The throwback shell is a close replica of the team’s helmet from 1966-1969. It features a grey facemask but also has white, black, and gold stripes running through the middle.
The Falcons have revealed they had the state’s colleges, Georgia Tech and the University of Georgia, in mind when deciding on the colors.
