Multiple reports from earlier this week state that Baltimore Ravens’ quarterback Lamar Jackson wants to join the New England Patriots, but one of the franchise’s former star players issued quite the warning to the 2019 league MVP.
Former Patriots’ Pro Bowl cornerback and well-known Bill Belichick critic Asante Samuel took to Twitter on Thursday and told Jackson that he will not want to play for the New England head coach:
On Monday, Jackson announced in a Twitter thread that he requested a trade from the Ravens back on Mar. 2. The Ravens placed the franchise tag on their star quarterback, thus preventing him from entering the free agent market.
A team can sign Jackson to an offer sheet, and Baltimore would have five days to match it. If they don’t, the Ravens would receive two first-round picks as draft compensation.
Samuel, of course, isn’t the only former Patriot to openly complain about Belichick.
The Patriots drafted Samuel in the fourth round, 120th overall, back in 2003. The UCF product emerged as a difference-maker in New England’s secondary, helping the franchise to consecutive Super Bowl championships in the 2003 and ’04 seasons.

Samuel earned his first of four career Pro Bowl nods with New England in 2007. He then signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in free agency and earned Pro Bowl honors in each of his three years there. Samuel spent his final two seasons (2012 and 2013) with the Atlanta Falcons.
Samuel’s son, Asante Samuel Jr., is entering his third season with the Los Angeles Chargers. The younger Samuel was drafted in the second round by the Bolts in 2021.
