It seems almost unfathomable that the 2015 NFL MVP has been cut from his team some five years later and is now waiting t see which team would want to take him on. That is the reality for Cam Newton right now after being released by the Carolina Panthers.
There have been many rumors out there to where he might end up, but nothing definite.
Well, it seems Herm Edwards has some inside information about that. The former NFL and current Arizona State head coach has heard that Newton is going to be headed to the West Coast to play football.
Via Bolts From the Blue:
“One of my colleagues here at SB Nation is an alumni of Arizona State University. He still has friends from college that currently work within the ASU media and they were recently in attendance for head football coach Herm Edwards’ weekly press conference that he is now hosting on the video platform Zoom. During the call, apparently the topic of Cam Newton/Chargers came up and Edwards said he “heard” Newton was signing with the Chargers.
So this should obviously be taken with the biggest grain of salt possible. It’s interesting to hear a Newton-Chargers rumor come up randomly in a press conference regarding Arizona State football and then when you combine the fact that Edwards used to work for ESPN, it almost forces you to start connecting the dots, a la Charlie from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
Beyond these statements, there’s not much else to go off of here. My colleague is going to reach out to his friends and see if either of them have recorded audio or video from the call in order for us to get a better idea of how he said the statement. He easily could have just rattled something off that he briefly saw on television or simply heard the same rumors we were all hearing over the last week. My money is one of these two.
As of now, some of those in the audience a have also tweeted out the same information.”
Just recently, Cam and current Chargers QB Tyrod Taylor were seen working out together, so there might be something going on behind the scenes.
