NFL players get paid a lot of money to play football. But they get hit with taxes that probably make them wonder whether it’s really worth the danger they put themselves in every game.
Tax percentages vary from state to state, with places like Florida very lenient in that regard while other states such as New York and California make a killing on their athletes given the huge sums they’re made to cough up every time they receive a salary.
San Francisco 49ers defensive end Arik Armstead’s paycheck was on full display this Friday as reporter Darren Rovell posted a photo of it to X. Armstead has discussed the NFL pay scale publicly before, revealing federal and state taxes on a typical NFL check. His figures were exposed again this week, with the photo showing that he makes $395,055 per game and pays close to half of it in taxes.
Check it out below:
So despite making the aforementioned amount per game, Armstead only gets to take $194,085 home.
That would not be the case if the DE was playing elsewhere, say for the Miami Dolphins.

Tyreek Hill only recently revealed his mother advised him to consider state taxes before he ended up with the Fins last year as the New York Jets actually made him a better offer in terms of guaranteed money. So yeah, taxes played a major role in that decision.
Armstead signed a five-year deal worth $85 million, including $48.5 million guaranteed, in 2020. He restructured his deal earlier this year, so most of his base pay comes to him as a signing bonus instead.
He’s now set to make $1,165,000 million in base pay this season, as well as the $3.5 million signing bonus and a $352,000 roster bonus, per Spotrac.com.
The 29-year-old will earn $17,410,000 plus another $3.5 million as a signing bonus in 2024 unless his contract is restructured again.
