The Associated Press has announced a drastic change for the NFL MVP award voting system.
Previously, the Associated Press had 50 NFL journalists put down one player’s name for the MVP award. But on Friday, the AP announced that the voters will now “rank” five players for the MVP award, and three choices for the other awards.
Ricardo Zuniga, the Global Sports Editor at the AP, stated the following:
“The essence of the AP NFL Awards remains the same – to recognize the top performers of the season. Our goal is to provide the voters with an accurate and fair voting system to reflect their preferences. These tweaks will help them in their selection process.”
Last season, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers won his second straight and fourth career MVP award. The future Hall of Famer garnered 39 votes, and quarterback Tom Brady of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers got 10. The other vote went to Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp.
Voters will also once again list their choices for the Offensive Rookie of the Year, Defensive Rookie of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Comeback Player of the Year, Coach of the Year and Assistant Coach of the Year.
There’s a high chance that the award will end up going to the quarterback on the team that finishes with the best record.
