Rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson is heading into his first season with the Indianapolis Colts as one of the team’s seven captains.
The former Florida star was selected via a player vote following the Colts making him the fourth-overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft. DeForest Buckner, Zaire Franklin, Ryan Kelly, Kenny Moore II, Quenton Nelson, and Shaquille Leonard are the other captains and are all established players in Indy.
It appears Richardson’s leadership and cheerful demeanor have really grown on his new teammates given their collective decision to have him go into his rookie season as a captain.
Colts head coach Shane Steichen named the player QB1 earlier this month and only needed a single quarter of action in preseason to make up his mind. The signal-caller said he never saw it coming.
“Honestly, I was shocked,” he admitted.
Richardson had been battling veteran Gardner Minshew for the starting job and came out on top, allowing the Colts to start preparing for their season and formulating their offensive schemes around him.
