Anthony Richardson is now expected to start the first game of the upcoming 2023/24 NFL season.
Richardson was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts as the fourth overall pick this offseason, having put on a show at the NFL Scouting Combine and at Pro Day. He has already made a good first impression on the Colts both on and off the practice field, having stood out in training while also extending a heartwarming gesture that’s gotten people talking in recent times.
While there’s nothing that can be said about his athleticism and physicality, the QB has attracted some criticism over his passing as he was branded “raw” ahead of the draft.
However, according to George Bremmer of the Kokomo Tribune, the Colts are loving what they’ve seen from Richardson so far and consider him to be more polished than initially advertised. The team is reported to be especially swayed by his work in the pocket and his ability to make high-level plays, with the new signal-caller strutting his stuff during rookie mini-camp.
The player’s pocket awareness was apparent while he played for the University of Florida as he showed an exceptional ability to avoid sacks under pressure. Per Legendary Upside’s Patrick Kerrane, his sack rate under pressure in 2022 was the lowest of any QB since 2015.
It’s no wonder the Colts released Nick Foles after watching Anthony in his first practice. The youngster will compete with Gardner Minshew for the starting job. But he’s now expected to get the nod in the season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars on September 10.
