It’s been quite a four-year run for one of the most gifted arms in the National Football League. Patrick Mahomes became the full-time quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2018 and it has been the best move the franchise has ever made.
Andy Reid’s team hosted the AFC Championship Game every year and the club has made two Super Bowl appearances.
A total of 63 regular-season appearances resulted in 18,991 yards through the air and just over four times as many touchdown passes (151) as interceptions (37).
However, not everybody thinks highly of him.
Mike Sando of The Athletic released his NFL “Quarterback Tiers” rankings, which is a survey of 50 NFL coaches and executives. According to the rankings, “A Tier 1 quarterback can carry his team each week. The team wins because of him. He expertly handles pure passing situations. He has no real holes in his game.”
One anonymous veteran defensive play caller ranked Patrick Mahomes as a Tier 2 QB.
“We love Mahomes because of his unorthodox throws, not because of his natural pocket presence,” the defensive play caller said. “And when that disappears, that is when they lose games. I don’t think that is a 1. I think that is a 2. Nothing against the guy. I love the kid. But take his first read away and what does he do? He runs, he scrambles and he plays streetball.”

Back in 2020, Mahomes admitted he didn’t understand how to read NFL defenses until “halfway through last year (2019).”
“I still think there’s a long way for me to go there,” Mahomes said on The Shop. “And that’s where mentally I think I can get better. Physically I feel like I’ve done a lot of stuff. I always work on the fundamentals and doing that stuff. But I think mentally I can still take my game to a whole another level.”
It’s safe to say that this defensive play caller will be watching real close in 2022 if Mahomes falters after the team traded six-time Pro Bowler Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins, and fellow wide receivers Demarcus Robinson and Byron Pringle signed with the Raiders and Bears.
