Andy Reid is one of the most brilliant minds the game of football has ever seen. But that hardly means he doesn’t need help.
In fact, he’s brilliant enough to know a good play when he sees one, even if it’s coming from the unlikeliest of sources.
Reid, who led the Kansas City Chiefs to another Super Bowl this year, recently revealed having once used a play that a janitor drew up. Speaking on Green Light with Chris Long, the head coach admitted having taken a play design from the owner of a company that cleaned the facilities while he was with the Green Bay Packers.
“He goes, ‘I got this play for you.’ And he kept telling me this over and over,” Reid said. “Finally, I said, ‘OK, here’s a card. Draw up the play.’ And he drew up the play. I go, ‘Dang, that’s pretty good.'”
Reid went on to say that the team scored off the play, though the guy’s wife would not believe it when he took credit for the resulting touchdown.
One can’t help but wonder whether Reid still uses that play today or whether he got at least a few more from the cleaning guy. The world may never know – but he will take ideas from just about anywhere.
