The Detroit Lions are coming into the 2023 season with heavy expectations to not only be good but qualify for the postseason.
Joint practices are largely about getting work in against an actual opponent, but injuries happen and they can sometimes knock out top players from every team. Early in the first of two joint practices against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Wednesday, the Detroit Lions lost not one but two notable wide receivers to leg injuries.
Detroit Lions receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams will be needed to make the playoffs a reality, but both of them are out after suffering injuries during a joint practice against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Williams was seen walking under his own power to the locker room, which is good news. St. Brown never went to the locker room, and was seen by reporters on the sideline with his ankle taped.
Detriot Lions coach Dan Campbell provided updates on the two, but was a mixed update.

“Saint is about as unbreakable as they get. I’m not worried about it,” Campbell said. “I don’t think this is going to be something major. I think that he could be down a little bit but tentatively right now, I think we’ll be okay here. I think this guy can overcome quite a bit so I think we’ll be alright.”
Campbell estimated that St. Brown should return anywhere between Monday and the preseason finale against the Carolina Panthers.
Campbell initially dodged the initial question about former first-round pick Jameson Williams.
“We’re not going to have him for the first six games, so… you know,” Campbell said.
If you’re confused by what Campbell means, he is referring to Williams who is set to miss the first six games of the 2023 season due to a violation of the league’s gambling policy
St. Brown recorded 106 receptions for 1,161 yards and six touchdowns last season and is expected to head into this season as the Lions’ unquestioned WR1.
Williams’ first two NFL seasons could not have possibly gotten off to a worse start. He was limited to just one reception for 41 yards last season while recovering from an ACL tear suffered at Alabama.
