With a lot of fancy stats and some machine learning–powered visual aids, Amazon is trying to reinvent how football is consumed and they are doing a great job of it.
Earlier this year, Amazon Prime Video took a different approach when they unveiled defensive alerts on Prime Vision with Next Gen Stats that completely changed the way the game is consumed.
Before the Jets and Browns kicked off, it was revealed that the AI-powered feature would be available tonight as it would identify players in real-time.
It tracks player movements before the snap.
Sideline reporter Kaylee Hartung broke down the “unusual threats” that do not include defensive linemen or edge rushers, who are expected to pressure the passer.
“You will see red orbs like this pop up in real time,” said Hartung, who had one of the animated orbs under her feet at the time. “They will highlight defensive players who could pose unusual threats to rush the quarterback.”
The feature combines “in-game player tracking, data from over 50,000 historical plays, and the help of expert knowledge,” Hartung said.

This technology was developed by former creator of the XFL2020 Rules and Technology and Stanford offensive lineman Sam Schwartzstein.
The data they have comes from the league’s Next Gen Stats, which tracks all players and provides analytics data to the NFL.
