In a stunning development on Wednesday, Chicago Bears’ defensive coordinator Alan Williams resigned following reports that FBI agents had raided his home as well as Halas Hall — the team’s official headquarters.
It was subsequently reported that Halas Hall had not been raided. Following reports on Williams’ home being searched by the feds, however, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that the 53-year-old announced his resignation on Wednesday morning.
ESPN’s Courtney Cronin spook to Chicago-based sports attorney Andrew M. Stroth, who is representing Williams. In a statement to Cronin, Stroth stated that his client resigned due to “health challenges” and family matters:
“Given the false rumors and what seems to be out there on social media, I just want to set the record straight that Coach Williams has some health challenges and some family issues he’s dealing with and he thought it was the right time to take a step back and deal with those issues. He has tremendous respect for the Bears organization and he just though it was the time to handle this health issue and his personal matters.”
Cronin shared the statement from Stroth about an hour after ML Football reported that agents found “extremely sensitive content” in Williams home. ML Football heard from a source that Williams is unlikely to coach in the NFL again.

Williams was hired by Bears’ head coach Matt Eberflus to serve as the team’s defensive coordinator in 2022. Williams and Eberflus were previously together with the Indianapolis Colts, working as the defensive backs coach and defensive coordinator, respectively.
The Bears find themselves 0-2 for the first time since 2016. They’ll try to pick up their first victory on the year when they visit the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs this Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium.
We’ll be sure to provide more details when they become available.
