NFL fans were confused by one of NBC’s features during the broadcast of the Kansas City Chiefs-Detroit Lions Kickoff Game on Thursday night.
On several occasions during the broadcast, the cameras cut to Aidan Hutchinson’s parents, Melissa and Chris, on several occasions. The two were mic’d up for the game at Arrowhead Stadium, and fans were simply confused as to why NBC kept showing the two throughout the contest.

Granted, it’s always cool to see when cameras show players’ family members and friends in the crowd during games. But it’s certainly rare to have them actually mic’d up during a live broadcast.
The Lions drafted the Michigan product and local kid first overall last year. Hutchinson was joining a Detroit team that finished as football’s second-worst club in 2021, so expectations weren’t exactly high in Motor City a year ago.
But Hutchinson and the Lions exceeded expectations tremendously last year, finishing 9-8 and only missing out on the postseason via tiebreaker to the Seattle Seahawks. Detroit ended the season on a high note by eliminating Aaron Rodgers’ Green Bay Packers from playoff contention at Lambeau Field.
Hutchinson was one of the top rookies of 2022, notching 9.5 sacks, three interceptions and as many pass defenses. The Lions entered 2023 with enough hype to the point where the NFL was happy to place them in the Kickoff Game against the defending champions.
