As expected, the Denver Broncos will release quarterback Russell Wilson and send him to free agency for the first time in his Hall of Fame career.
Several teams have been mentioned as possible landing spots for the nine-time Pro Bowler, including the Pittsburgh Steelers. After the season, head coach Mike Tomlin admitted that the Steelers plan to bring in QB competition for Kenny Pickett.
But according to a report from Mike DeFabo of The Athletic, the Steelers have no plans to pursue the former Super Bowl-winning signal-caller in free agency:
“The Steelers are not interested in signing Wilson in the likely event he’s released by the Denver Broncos, a source familiar with the coaching staff’s feelings on the quarterback at this stage of his career told The Athletic.”
The Broncos announced on Monday that they will officially release Wilson when the new league year begins on Mar. 13. But going by DeFabo’s latest report, it’s clear that the Steelers can be removed as a potential landing spot for Wilson.
Though the Broncos will take on a massive dead money charge of $85 million for releasing Wilson, they also avoid having to pay $37 million in guaranteed money, as noted by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

The Broncos acquired Wilson in a massive blockbuster trade with the Seattle Seahawks in the 2022 offseason. Wilson then signed a lucrative five-year contract extension with the club worth $245 million.
Though Wilson can’t take all of the blame for his struggles in Mile High City, the trade unquestionably flopped big-time for the Broncos. He went 11-19-0 with 6,594 passing yards and 42 touchdowns against 19 interceptions.
