If the New England Patriots fire (or “part ways with”) head coach Bill Belichick, another team out west will reportedly be the front-runner for his services.
Citing a source, veteran NFL journalist and author Gary Myers reports that the Los Angeles Chargers “will be the favorites to” land the six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach.
With the Patriots headed towards a third losing and non-playoff season in four years, many expect owner Robert Kraft to make a change between now and the end of the regular season. The Patriots (2-8) are in the running for the first overall pick, which would give them the chance to draft a can’t-miss QB prospect like Caleb Williams or Drake Maye.
Even if Kraft is keen on retaining Belichick, the 71-year-old may opt a fresh start anyway. And the Chargers would make all the sense in the world for Belichick.
He’d be inheriting a roster in win-now mode, led by franchise cornerstones Justin Herbert, Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, Austin Ekeler, Rashawn Slater, Derwin James Jr., Khalil Mack, Joey Bosa and Asante Samuel Jr.
Tom Telesco is one of the best GMs in the game, at least from a roster-building standpoint. Belichick could focus strictly on fixing the Chargers’ ultra-talented albeit underachieving defense, with Herbert and company headlining a top-tier offense.

Most playoff-caliber teams, of course, won’t be seeking a new head coach this year. If Belichick wants to go to a team that’s trying to win in 2024, then the Chargers are likely his best choice.
