The NFL Network is expected to undergo additional layoffs, with ProFootballTalk reporting on Friday that the network is set to cut a significant number of jobs.
The publication noted that the actual number is unknown, citing a spokesperson who made claims of economic shifts within the industry being the reason for the layoffs.
“Due to economic and industry-wide shifts, we have had to evaluate the best way to allocate our resources,” said spokesperson was quoted as saying. “As part of that process, we have made the tough decision to separate from a limited number of positions.”
PFT has also reported being told that the cuts will affect less than five percent of full-time employees in L.A, which could mean up to 50 or more people as over 1,000 of them work at the network’s L.A campus.
Per a PFT source, some of the employees on contracts won’t get their deals renewed in order to avoid the “termination” phrase. But in cases where employees are expecting a new deal, it’s still termination.
While the NFL is doing very well financially, the NFL Network isn’t a core part of the league and cuts can be made easily as they don’t really affect the product. It’s also easier to fashion layoffs after the draft because the network doesn’t have as much need for workers as it does in the buildup.
