ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter has provided an update on Joe Burrow’s status following the quarterback getting carted off from practice on Thursday.
Burrow went down clutching his calf on a play, causing widespread panic as there were fears he could miss the entire 2023 season. Head coach Zac Taylor told reporters the QB is nursing a strained calf.
Speaking on ESPN’s ‘Get UP’ on Friday morning, Schefter said the general belief is that the player indeed strained his calf, pointing out that he had already experienced some tightness in the muscle, which is why he was wearing a sleeve.
The journo pointed out that, while Burrow should be good in a few weeks, he is unlikely to return to the practice field before inkling a new deal with the Bengals and we might not see him in training camp again until he becomes the highest-paid player in the NFL.
The injury comes after the Los Angeles Chargers made Justin Herbert the highest-paid player in the league, signing him to a five-year deal worth $262 million. Cincinnati’s thought to be on the clock now and, as Schefter has pointed out, there’s no reason for Joe to be out there before agreeing on an extension of his own.
Fans will be relieved to learn that the QB isn’t expected to be out for a significant period, which is the biggest takeaway from Schefter’s update.

A simple strain would mean that he’d be back with time to spare where the start of next season is concerned.
