On Saturday, Adam Schefter and fellow ESPN insider Jeff Darlington broke the news that the greatest NFL player of all time, Tom Brady, was finally retiring.
Rumors of Brady’s retirement had already been swirling, even prior to his Buccaneers’ loss to the Los Angeles Rams in the Divisional Round last weekend. But when word (seemingly) officially broke yesterday, it sent the NFL world into a frenzy…
But then we started to hear word that Brady was NOT yet retired. Rather, the Bucs’ quarterback was said — by his father and agent, among others — to still be contemplating his future. NFL insider Mike Silver even reported that Brady had spoken to Tampa GM Jason Licht to inform him that, despite all the reports, no decision had been made.
Despite all the contradicting reports, ESPN didn’t back down from their report. Rather, they doubled down on it.
Adam Schefter even took the time to explain the process, stating that Brady has not officially made the announcement yet and is still working through the process, but despite all the belief that he could continue playing, Schefty is still confident that Brady’s retirement announcement will be coming “relatively soon.”

According to Schefter, he claims that Brady’s agent, Don Yee, said that Brady still hasn’t contacted the Bucs to inform them of his decision, but he expects that, along with Brady’s announcement, to come soon.
“I think there’s some steps that [Brady] wants to go through here before he’s ready. But make no mistake about it, that time is coming. And in the words of Don Yee, that time is coming quote-unquote, ‘soon.'”
All of this seems to line up with previous reports that Brady will wait until after February 4 to announce his retirement in order to cash in on a $15-million signing bonus.
It’s also being reported that Brady does not want to upstage the NFL playoffs with his retirement. And, at the same time, I’m sure he doesn’t want the NFL playoffs to upstage his retirement, either.
When the GOAT is officially ready to call it a career, he’ll let us know. Until then, we’re all going to have to hang tight.
