Raiders owner Mark Davis’ decision to fire general manager Dave Ziegler and head coach Josh McDaniel should ultimately prove to be the correct one, but it’s also a very costly one.
Davis severed ties with the GM and HC on Wednesday morning and has since appointed linebackers coach Antonio Pierce as an interim head coach. It’s going to be interesting to see how he fares in his first game against the Giants on Sunday.
Champ Kelly has also been bumped up to GM after serving as an assistant under Ziegler.
As for Davis, he’s set to write some big checks after getting rid of Ziegler, Davis, and some other members of the coaching staff. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the terminations will cost the businessman a whopping $85 million.
“Some sources around the organization say Davis isn’t worried about money — he’s worried about putting together a winning organization, which is what led to this week’s shakeup, costs be damned,” Schefter reports.
The NFL insider also claims that the owner apologized to some of the players for “wasting their season” after they lost to the Lions on Monday night.
