The biggest story for the Dallas Cowboys for the second straight offseason is whether they are going to give him the long-term deal he wants or set on tagging him once again.
The team could actually trade Prescott after placing the franchise tag on him this offseason, but the quarterback would need to play alongside for that to happen.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter explained the situation on Get Up:
“To do that, they need a certain level of cooperation from Dak Prescott,” Schefter cautioned Thursday on ESPN’s Get Up. “He’s got to come in and sign that franchise tag knowing he’s being traded somewhere. If they had a deal worked out with somebody to a place where he didn’t want to go, what would be his incentive to sign that?
“This is, really, an unofficial no-trade tag that Dak Prescott has by getting the franchise tag, if indeed the Cowboys do put that tag on him. That would be his unofficial no-trade clause. They could not just trade him without his consent.”
Mike Greenberg noted in the video that a total of 17 NFL players have been traded while on the franchise tag, and 15 have gone on to sign new deals after being dealt.

However, Matt Cassel is the only QB to ever get traded after being tagged, as he moved from the New England Patriots to Kansas City Chiefs in 2009.
Prescott played last season on the franchise tag after the two sides couldn’t agree on contract length, with the Cowboys wanting 5 years and Dak wanting four. He ended up with a one-year tender worth $31.4 million.
The 27-year-old played only five games before suffering a gruesome compound right ankle fracture and dislocation.
