From 2015 to 2019, there was no doubt who the Buccaneers’ starting quarterback would be (No. 1 overall pick Jameis Winston). And of course, from 2020 to 2022, Tom Brady certainly had no reason to worry about losing his starting job.
But with Brady now retired, the Buccaneers are holding a QB competition between Baker Mayfield (another former first overall pick) and 2021 second-rounder Kyle Trask. Mayfield is now on his fourth team in three years, while Trask has attempted just nine passes at the NFL level.
After four seasons with the Cleveland Browns, Mayfield was traded to the Carolina Panthers following their acquisition of Deshaun Watson. Mayfield was released midseason following an ugly start and wound up spending four games with the Los Angeles Rams, who lost starting QB Matthew Stafford for the year with a spinal cord contusion.
