Back in 2022, Aaron Rodgers said he experienced a “deeper love” of himself while using ayahuasca, a psychedelic drink he has touted over the last year.
This past offseason, he went viral after he spent a few days at a darkness retreat to think about whether he wanted to retire or continue his career. It led him to state he wanted to play for the New York Jets.
He got his wish, but it lasted all of four minutes of game time as he would go down with a torn Achilles that would end his season.
In the eyes of Hall of Fame tight end Tony Gonzalez — Rodgers doing ayahuasca in his spare time as well as being at a darkness retreat is the reason he will be able to come back from his injury.
“This is why you do the ayahuasca and the darkness retreat. It isn’t just for the good times; it’s for the bad times,” Gonzalez said before Thursday Night Football tonight. “He is mentally prepared to tackle this mountain, because it’s going to be a mountain for him. I can’t wait to see him back out there on that field next year and maybe go for a Super Bowl run.”
Rodgers turns 40 in December.

On Instagram, he posted like a man who knew he was coming back for at least one more season.
“I’m completely heartbroken and moving through all of the emotions, but deeply touched and humbled by the support and love,” Rodgers wrote. “Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers as I begin the healing process today.
“The night is darkest before the dawn. And I shall rise yet again.”
Before the injury, Rodgers had mentioned on numerous occasions that his goal was to play multiple years with the Jets. He is signed through 2025 and due to receive $38 million in guarantees in 2024.
