The conclusion to the Great Aaron Rodgers Trade Saga appeared to be inching closer, but there is a massive holdup in the deal.
To get things done, Green Bay has backed off from wanting New York’s first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft as part of the package. Brian Gutekunst, the GM of the Packers, said a first-rounder was not a “necessity” in a Rodgers deal.
ESPN NFL insiders Jeremy Fowler and Dan Granziano recently highlighted what is going on behind the scenes that has made this trade not go down as of yet.
“The issue is the compensation package going Green Bay’s way from the Jets. After talking to multiple sources in Phoenix, I do not believe the Packers are insisting on the Jets’ first-round pick (No. 13 overall), and I think that the high second-round pick they got from Cleveland in the Elijah Moore trade could be a key to getting this done,” Graziano reports.
Aside from the draft compensation, the Jets also have worries about how long Rodgers will actually stay in New York.
“The Jets have expressed to the Packers throughout this process that their major concern was how long they’ll have Rodgers, and not wanting to overpay for a player who might only be there for one year,” Granziano added.
The two sides have been deadlocked for weeks as they try to negotiate the trade that the entire NFL is waiting on.
