If New York Jets’ head coach Robert Saleh is correct, Monday night will not have marked the final game of Aaron Rodgers’ illustrious career.
On just the Jets’ fourth offensive snap in their season opener against the Buffalo Bills, Rodgers suffered a torn Achilles that will sideline him for the rest of the year. Rodgers mulled retirement this past offseason and will turn 40 in December, leading to speculation that his playing career is over.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, however, Saleh said he’d “be shocked if” Rodgers wound up retiring, per ESPN’s Rich Cimini.
“I’d be shocked if this is the way he’s going to go out,” Saleh stated.
Rodgers sought a trade from the Green Bay Packers in the 2021 offseason, but he wound up playing two more seasons for the franchise. Finally, the four-time league MVP and the Packers agreed to part ways this offseason, and he was traded to the Jets in a blockbuster move.
It’s an extremely unfortunate break for Rodgers and the Jets, to say the least. The future Hall of Famer was ecstatic about a fresh start, and the Jets seemingly had their first true star quarterback in place since Joe Namath.

Per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, Saleh stated on Monday that backup QB Zac Wilson will be the Jets’ starter going forward.
Coming off a thrilling overtime win over their AFC East rivals, the Jets will try to improve to 2-0 on the year when they visit the Dallas Cowboys this Sunday.
