Former Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers wanted team general manager Brian Gutekunst fired in 2021, according to a report from The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman.
The report notes that the QB, who is now with the New York Jets following a 2023 offseason trade, had attempted to gain clout within the Packers organization and requested Gutekunst’s axing through his agent David Dunn.
A source closely linked to the Packers told The Athletic that Dunn contacted team president Matt Murphy with an ultimatum in 2021 that pressed him to fire the GM or trade the player. Murphy did not bend to the demand but also kept it under wraps.
Per the source, this played a major role in the breakdown of the relationship between Rodgers and the Packers’ front office. The relationship would be further strained when news of Rodgers wanting out broke a few months later.
The team remained intransigent, keeping the veteran QB on their roster until this year, when he was traded to the Jets. The Packers are moving forward with Jordan Love as their starting quarterback while the Jets hope to win their first Super Bowl since 1969 with Rodgers as their QB1.
Asked for comment on the matter by The Athletic, Rodgers directed the outlet to Dunn, who did not respond.

The Athletic broke a similar story on Russell Wilson earlier this year. In Wilson’s case, the QB is said to have asked for both the GM and his coach to be fired.
