Could the 49ers be out on their young starting quarterback?
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport tweeted that the 49ers have received inquiries from several teams looking into a potential trade for quarterback Trey Lance. Rapoport continued, saying no trade is imminent as the 49ers must make sure Brock Purdy’s rehab continues to go as smoothly as it’s been going, but the interest from other teams in Lance has been there this offseason.
“The #49ers have received inquiries from several teams looking into potential trade for former No. 3 pick QB Trey Lance. The conversations have been the result of SF fielding the calls, not making them, with teams aware that Brock Purdy is likely the future starter,” Rapoport said.
“While no trade is imminent, and the #49ers would almost certainly want to make sure Brock Purdy’s rehab continues to go as smoothly as it’s been going, the interest from other teams in Lance has been there,” Rapoport tweeted.
Lance played college football at North Dakota State University, where he set numerous records and won the Walter Payton Award in 2019 as the most outstanding offensive player in the FCS. Lance’s college career was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as the 2020 FCS season was postponed to the spring of 2021. Despite only playing one full season in college, Lance was considered one of the top quarterback prospects in the 2021 NFL Draft.

In 2021, Lance was drafted by the 49ers as the third overall pick in the NFL draft. He was supposed to be the future of the franchise, but an injury from last year ended his year early and Jimmy Garoppolo, who has since moved on to the Raiders, had to step in and lead the team again despite later suffering his own season-ending injury.
Since the 49ers drafted him in 2021, Trey Lance has played in eight games. He has thrown for 797 yards while completing 54.9 percent of his passes. He’s thrown five touchdowns and two interceptions.
Lance seems to have all the tools necessary to succeed at the highest level of football, and if he continues to work hard and develop his skills, he could lead the 49ers or another team to many successful seasons in the future.
