Well that didn’t take long.
Shortly after news broke that the San Francisco 49ers had lost starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo for the season, the team wasted no time making a move to fill a hole at the position.
According to NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Niners have signed quarterback Josh Johnson off the Denver Broncos’ practice squad.
This is actually Johnson’s fourth go-around with the Niners, as he was a member of their practice squad in 2012, 2014 and from 2020 to 2021.
At the moment, Brock Purdy is the only healthy quarterback left on the 49ers’ active roster. The team also has Jacob Eason on their practice squad. It’s likely that he and Johnson will now compete for backup duties behind Purdy.
As for Garoppolo, he’s the second starting quarterback that the Niners have lost for the season in 2022. Earlier in the year, Trey Lance suffered a season-ending ankle injury during a week 2 win over the Seattle Seahawks.
