By the time the San Francisco 49ers left the locker room for the start of the second half against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, their good season had taken a huge hit as the team would have to deal with losing their 2nd starting quarterback to a season-ending injury.
This time, it was a broken left foot for Jimmy Garoppolo. This will be the third time since 2018 that Garoppolo will finish a season on injured reserve. It’s the second ankle injury to a Niners starting quarterback this season. Lance suffered a right fibula fracture in a Sept. 18 win against the Seattle Seahawks that landed him on injured reserve.
Rookie Brock Purdy replaced Garoppolo as he finished 25-of-37 for 210 yards and two scores with an interception for a passer rating of 88.8. However, nobody expects this young QB to be the answer going forward.
During the offseason, there was much speculation about the possible return of quarterback Colin Kaepernick to the NFL, and that speculation has picked up yet again now that Jimmy Garoppolo fractured his right ankle and is expected to miss the rest of the season.
So instead of being forced to use Brock Purdy, the Mr. Irrelevant from the NFL Draft, many are taking to social media to urge the 49ers to do the right thing and contact Colin Kaepernick.

Purdy’s lack of NFL experience could badly hurt a team that has Super Bowl aspirations. Kaepernick played in the NFL from 2011 to 2016 always with the 49ers, with whom he reached Super Bowl XLVII which he lost against the Baltimore Ravens.
His final year was with the team in which he was best remembered for kneeling during the National Anthem to protest against police brutality against black people in the United States.
Back in 2020, Kyle Shanahan referred to the case of Kaepernick:
“It’s three years later, and there’s still some people not understanding what his message was,” Shanahan said of Kaepernick. “And, regardless, that’s too many people not understanding the message that everyone’s been giving for a long time. And Colin did it the strongest out of anybody, and people should respect him a ton for that and admire that.”
In the meantime, the 49ers wasted little time Sunday moving to add a veteran backup by signing Josh Johnson from the Denver Broncos practice squad.
