San Francisco 49ers’ quarterback Trey Lance is a name to follow on the NFL trade market as the regular season draws closer.
On Friday, it was reported that Lance had “really struggled” in the 49ers’ training camp session, while Brock Purdy and Sam Darnold both flourished with some strong play. At this point, Lance may be simply competing for the second-stringer job instead of the starting position.
In Lance’s defense, he’s only made four starts through two seasons and thus hasn’t had the chance to fully prove himself. That said, a fresh start may be necessary for him to fully unlock his potential.
If the 49ers end up shopping Lance, there shouldn’t be a shortage of teams interested in the No. 3 selection of the 2021 NFL Draft.
Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox mentioned the Las Vegas Raiders as a team that should inquire about Lance. Jimmy Garoppolo and Lance, of course, were teammates in San Francisco for two seasons:
“Lance was a highly regarded draft prospect who had an incredible collegiate season in 2019 (28 TDs, zero INTs, 1,100 rushing yards). Teams seeking an heir to an aging or oft-injured starter, like the Los Angeles Rams and Las Vegas Raiders, should make an offer for Lance immediately.
If Purdy’s recovery lingers through the preseason and Lance uses his opportunity to shine, the 49ers might not be willing to let him go.”

If Lance is available for the right price, the Raiders definitely should consider trading for him. Garoppolo has been a serviceable starter when healthy, but he’s been limited to 51 total games since the 2018 season.
Garoppolo is awfully injury-prone and cannot be trusted to stay fully healthy. Adding a promising dual-threat QB like Lance would give the Raiders much-needed quarterback insurance in what could be a make-or-break year for the Josh McDaniels-Dave Ziegler tandem.
