San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance is suddenly one of the top names to follow on the NFL trade market.
On Wednesday, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported that San Francisco has “received inquiries from several teams” regarding a possible trade for the North Dakota State product with Brock Purdy “likely” winning the 49ers’ starting QB job.
There is a rumor going around that the Indianapolis Colts and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are among the clubs who have contacted the 49ers on a trade for Lance. The Colts released primary 2022 starter Matt Ryan earlier this offseason, and the Bucs lost Tom Brady to retirement.
Indianapolis holts the No. 4 selection in next week’s NFL Draft. Alabama’s Bryce Young, Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud, Kentucky’s Will Levis and Florida’s Anthony Richardson are the consensus top four quarterback prospects in this year’s class.

The Buccaneers signed 2018 first overall pick Baker Mayfield in free agency. Right now, it looks like Mayfield and Kyle Trask will duke it out for the starting quarterback job, but GM Jason Licht has time to make another move at the position.
Lance, the No. 3 pick of the 2021 NFL draft, opened the 2022 season as San Fran’s starter. Unfortunately, he suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2 against the Seattle Seahawks, and Jimmy Garoppolo took over the starting QB position.
11 weeks later, however, Garoppolo suffered a foot injury that ended his season. Purdy won all five of his regular season starts and helped the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game, where they fell to the Philadelphia Eagles.
