Things are looking up for Trey Lance at OTAs.
During an appearance on NFL Live, ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington revealed that the young and still unproven quarterback had been given with the first-team offense over Sam Darnold.
“Trey Lance is the guy during OTAs who’s been taking all the 1st-team reps; he’s healthy at this point. Sam Darnold really getting backup duty as he kinda gets his playbook under his belt. But for now, Trey Lance getting his opportunity with those first-team reps.”
The only reason that Lance and Darnold are being considered for the starter’s role is because Brock Purdy is absent due to a torn ulnar collateral ligament. He’s had surgery and there is widespread optimism that he may be close to returning by the time the 49ers open their season against the Pittsburgh Steelers on September 10.
As you know, Lance went down with a season-ending injury in Week 2 last year, which eventually opened the door for Brock Purdy who helmed the 49ers in a run to the NFC title game.
After two years in Carolina, Sam Darnold signed on with the 49ers this offseason.

Although the team traded a massive haul to take Lance in 2021, he’s barely played and there does seem to be a legitimate question about his future in San Francisco.
The 49ers traded up to select Lance with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. If all goes well in 2023, San Francisco will have a fifth-year option to pick up on him in 2024.
In 2021, Lance would play in six games and complete 57.7 percent of his passes for 603 yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions. He also rushed for 168 yards and a touchdown.
