San Francisco 49ers fans may have appreciated the clarity they got from their team this week but some of them are feeling it for Trey Lance as the general manager has offered an update on the quarterback situation that does not look good for the former Bison star.
Lance was brought in to be the future of the franchise, with the Niners picking him third overall in 2021. He played backup to Jimmy Garoppolo in his first year before being named the starting QB last season, only for him to suffer a season-ending injury after just two games.
Brock Purdy emerged as a breakout star after both Lance and Jimmy G got sidelined, and it appears the 49ers have decided to move on with him as their QB1.
GM John Lynch has reportedly indicated that Purdy will be given an opportunity to remain the team’s starter in 2023. According to Nick Wagoner of ESPN, Lynch gave a glowing endorsement of Purdy, though it’s not clear when he will be able to play again following his elbow surgery.
Given that the Niners have also signed Sam Darnold, fans have expressed some concern for Lance.

San Francisco gave up a lot of assets in order to get Trey. That they’ve already indicated that they aren’t going to go with him next season, or at least have him battle it out with Purdy, is quite odd.
A trade wouldn’t be out of the question at this point.
