San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan isn’t reading too much into Brock Purdy’s surprisingly woeful performance against the Baltimore Ravens on Monday night.
In a showdown of football’s two best teams on Christmas Day, it was Lamar Jackson and the Ravens who made their statement with a 33-19 victory at Levi’s Stadium. Purdy had by far the worst outing of his young career under the prime time lights, throwing four interceptions while taking two sacks in the 14-point defeat.
But during a conference call with reporters on Tuesday, Shanahan made it clear that he’s not overly worried about Purdy’s forgettable performance, via 49ers Webzone:
“Oh, Brock, he’ll bounce back. He’ll be in there tomorrow looking at the film. He’ll come to Wednesday ready to go. Hopefully his stinger clears up, which I expect it to. Our whole team will bounce back.”
Purdy was taken out of the game in the fourth quarter after suffering a shoulder stinger. Sam Darnold finished out the game for the Ravens, though Shanahan’s words above indicate that Purdy was simply taken out for precautionary reasons.

The good news for the 49ers is that they still control their own destiny for the NFC’s top seed, as they hold the tiebreakers over the Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions. The 49ers just have to win out (at Washington this week, vs. the Rams next week) to lock down the No. 1 seed and first-round bye.
Purdy is still among the top candidates to win NFL MVP honors despite Monday’s ugly performance. He has 4,050 passing yards and 29 touchdowns to go along with 140 rushing yards and two rushing scores.
