The San Francisco 49ers are bringing in a former NFL head coach to join Kyle Shanahan’s staff.
Per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler and Adam Schefter, the 49ers are hiring ex-Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley for what’s being called “a prominent staff role.” The team also promoted defensive passing game specialist Nick Sorensen to their defensive coordinator role:
Shanahan fired DC Steve Wilks following the 49ers’ heartbreaking Super Bowl 58 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. After a search that lased over two weeks, Shanahan has decided to hire his new DC from within.
Staley was the Chargers’ head coach from 2021 to 2023, compiling a 24-24-0 record. He was fired after a 5-9 start this past season, with Giff Smith finishing out the year as the interim HC.
