Last week, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported that the NFC West club has “received inquiries from several teams” on the North Dakota State product.
San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch has commented on trade rumors surrounding quarterback Trey Lance.
But 49ers general manager John Lynch poured cold water over the rumors that the team is shopping Lance, via ESPN’s Adam Schefter:
“It hasn’t been extremely active, and it’s not like we’ve put it out there that, ‘Hey, we’re taking offers for Trey, call 1-800 to,’ that’s not been the process. It hasn’t been that substantive and we’re focused, as is Trey, on his ability to compete and play an integral role on this team.”
The No. 3 pick of the 2021 NFL Draft opened the 2022 season as San Francisco’s starting quarterback. Lance unfortunately suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2, prompting the club to go back to veteran Jimmy Garoppolo as their starter.

Garoppolo suffered a season-ending foot injury in Week 13, and Kyle Shanahan had to turn to third-stringer Brock Purdy. The 2022 Mr. Irrelevant won all five regular season starts and helped San Fran to the NFC Championship Game, where they fell to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Purdy suffered a UCL injury in the NFC title game against Philadelphia. That forced San Fran to turn to backup Josh Johnson, who had to leave the game because of a concussion. Purdy returned but was extremely limited in the 31-7 loss.
Purdy underwent surgery on his UCL, and the hope is that he’ll be able to return to the team by August. If that ends up being the case the case, Purdy will have gotten enough time to prepare himself for Week 1.
But it also doesn’t hurt the 49ers to keep Lance as an insurance option for at least a year. Their other option at quarterback is Sam Darnold, who was picked up in free agency following a lackluster two-year tenure with the Carolina Panthers.
The 49ers obviously thought highly of Lance when they moved up to the No. 3 spot back in 2021, so it would be a surprise if they decided to give up on him after just four career starts. But we’ll just have to wait and see how it all plays out in the coming weeks.
