Just imagine giving a dynamic up and coming quarterback like Jimmy G a weapon in Odell Beckham Jr. and the possibilities it could mean for the future of the franchise.
That almost happened when an official revealed as much to Jay Glazer almost two weeks ago. The 49ers were rumored to be strongly in the mix for OBJ, but the Giants would go on to ship him to the Cleveland Browns for safety Jabrill Peppers, the 17th overall selection, and a third-round pick.
On Friday, 49ers general manager John Lynch appeared on KNBR and confirmed that the Giants did indeed want their hands on the second overall draft pick in the 2019 Draft.
“I think, ironically, the fact that we had the No. 2 pick made it more difficult because they wanted that badly,” Lynch said. “They wanted two No. 1s. And we weren’t willing to part with that. It was too valuable of a pick.”
At one point, rumors suggested that the 49ers were interested in the services of Antonio Brown before he was ultimately shipped off to the Oakland Raiders.
“We took a quick look and then we just said, ‘Hey, we’re not interested in that for our team,’” Lynch said. “That’s where we are. I think we feel pretty good about our receiving corps. I know a lot of people don’t share our sentiments.”
