Three NFL teams have been named as the best fits for Los Angeles Chargers running back Austin Ekeler following the player’s request to be traded. The Chargers have acquiesced on that front and Ekeler will likely be playing in a new uniform next season.
As such, speculation has been rife as a blockbuster trade could soon be underway. NFL insider Matt Lombardo has listed three teams that could feature Ekeler next term, namely the Atlanta Falcons, Chicago Bears, and Buffalo Bills.
Lombardo came up with the aforementioned by narrowing down the teams who have cap space and are in need of a quality RB.
The Bears seem like the team most capable as they have the most cap space in the league and have 17 picks spread out over the next two years. They’re also looking to put the best offense possible around Justin Fields and, having lost David Montgomery to free agency, could use a player who could carry the ball but also block expertly. Montgomery did both very well and, with him gone, Ekeler would make an excellent replacement.
As for the Falcons, they’re in rebuild mode and have $39 million in cap space while their division, the NFC South, will be up for grabs next season. Ekeler should present an attractive option as he’s become the best RB on the current market.
The Bills, meanwhile, already boast one of the best offenses in the league but could still use a player of Ekeler’s skillset as James Cook is set to take on a more significant role. Making such an addition would make the Bills an even bigger threat in the AFC East, especially as the Miami Dolphins have gotten even stronger after nearly beating them in last season’s wild-card round.
