ESPN has announced that their numbers for the CFP National Championship game on Monday night totaled a record low of 17.2 million.
The game, a 65-7 affair between the victorious Georgia Bulldogs over the TCU Horned Frogs, was one of the most boring title games ever. And the fact that viewership was the lowest since the BCS era started in 1999 is telling enough.
It was evident that the game would have been a one-sided showpiece pretty early so many viewers tuned out once they realized they were watching a dud. Of course, there’s probably not a Bulldogs fan who stopped watching the game, while anyone else with an interest, such as gambling, probably stayed tuned too.
It’s also worth noting that fewer people are watching television nowadays. Over 30 million households in the U.S. have cut cords but streaming hasn’t really made up.
The previous record-low National Championship game wasn’t that long ago, with 18.65 million viewers tuning in to watch Alamaba vs. Ohio State in 2021.
Georgia’s 65-point tally counts as the most in a BCS/CFP title game and fashioned the biggest blowout suffered by an AP top-three program. The 58-point margin is also the largest in FBS bowl history.
