Georgia head coach Kirby Smart spared no punches while discussing one of his player’s actions following the Bulldogs’ loss to Ole Miss on Saturday.
The Bulldogs dropped their second game of the season after facing the Rebels this past weekend and are in a precarious position as it pertains to the expanded playoffs. All of their players would have been forgiven for sulking after the loss, but one of them didn’t seem bothered by it at all.
As a matter of fact, he was celebrating.
Safety Jake Pope was caught on camera jumping up and down with the Ole Miss fans after they stormed the field following their statement win. Given the college football culture in the United States, such behavior is considered unacceptable, but Pope clearly didn’t care.
Kirby Smart Bodied His Player In Front Of The Media
Pope was celebrating with a childhood friend he hadn’t seen in a while. But that was of little consolation to his coach, who referred to him as “an idiot.”

Kirby Smart was asked about the video showing Pope’s bizarre actions on Monday and expressed disgust with the safety.
“What an idiot. What — I mean, just stupid,” he said. “I didn’t see it until today, but he’s embarrassed by it, he’s upset about it. And that’s obviously a childhood friend of his … hadn’t seen him in forever. It’s not real smart, but to be honest with you, I don’t have time to waste energy on that.”
It’s not every day you hear a coach calling his own player an idiot in front of reporters. But Pope would do well to take this one on the chin.
